Noninvasive Diagnostic Testing

A slit lamp examination is a part of the diagnostic testing services we offer at the Global Retina Institute. This noninvasive examination allows our retinal specialists to examine the structures of your eye in detail and helps us identify abnormalities such as scratches, infections, inflammation, or damage to your eye’s structures.

The slit lamp exam is considered one of the most important diagnostic tests for eye conditions, and we are always looking to provide our patients with comprehensive testing options.

What to Expect During a Slit Lamp Exam

During the exam, you will be seated at a special microscope and instructed to place your chin on a rest to keep your head steady. A narrow beam of light is then directed into your eye through a small slit lamp.

The slit lamp enables us to observe the anterior and posterior segments of your eye, which includes the cornea, iris, lens, retina, and optic nerve. The slit lamp exam is painless and typically takes between 5 to 10 minutes to complete.

What Can the Results of the Examination Reveal?

The slit lamp examination can reveal a wide range of eye conditions and diseases, such as cataracts or retinal detachment. The examination can also detect conditions like glaucoma, which can cause irreversible vision loss if not diagnosed and treated in time.

Additionally, the examination can reveal signs of macular degeneration, a common eye condition that can lead to blindness if left untreated.

Benefits of the Slit Lamp

The slit lamp enables our specialists at the Global Retina Institute to provide our patients with early and effective treatment plans based on their needs. By diagnosing conditions early, we can improve the chances of successful treatment and reduce the risk of serious complications.

Moreover, the slit lamp examination is noninvasive and painless, making it a more comfortable experience for our patients.

Early Detection & Treatment

The slit lamp is an essential diagnostic tool, and we use it to diagnose and treat various eye conditions early and effectively. It all starts with a consultation with our retina specialists—schedule yours today.
