Causes & Symptoms of Retinal Breaks & Tears

Retinal breaks and tears occur when the retina, the thin layer of tissue that lines the back of the eye, is torn or damaged. Various factors, such as injury, aging, and certain medical conditions like diabetes, can cause this.

Symptoms of retinal breaks and tears can include:

Risk Factors of Retinal Breaks & Tears

At Global Retina Institute, we understand the importance of early detection and treatment of retinal breaks and tears to prevent more serious complications from developing.

One of the primary risks associated with retinal breaks and tears is retinal detachment, occurring when the retina pulls away from the back of the eye, which can lead to significant vision loss if it is not promptly treated.

Retinal detachment can occur due to a retinal tear, as fluid can collect between the retina and the surrounding tissue, causing the retina to separate from the rest of the eye.

Our Innovative Technology

At Global Retina Institute, we believe technology and treatment go hand-in-hand. We offer treatment options that can help repair retinal breaks and tears, preventing further damage and preserving your vision.

Our team of retina specialists can work closely with you to recommend a treatment option for your specific case based on the severity, size, and location of your retinal breaks or tears.

One of our advanced treatments is the Navilas Navigated Laser, which uses a precise, computer-guided laser to seal retinal breaks and tears. This minimally invasive procedure is highly effective and allows for faster recovery times.

The Navilas Navigated Laser creates a three-dimensional map of the patient’s retina, allowing our team to identify and target specific areas that need treatment.

The Iridex Laser uses a specially designed laser to create a scar around the retinal break, sealing it and preventing further fluid leakage. This technique is especially effective for patients with small or medium-sized breaks.

The laser creates a highly localized scar around the retinal break, minimizing damage to the surrounding tissue.

Cryopexy is an effective treatment option for repairing retinal tears and detachment. During this procedure, our team uses a specially designed probe to apply intense cold therapy to the back wall of the eye (sclera/retina), creating scar tissue around the retinal tear, which seals the tear.

Cryopexy is an ideal treatment for when there is no significant retinal detachment (subretinal fluid around the tear) and can help prevent more invasive procedures such as pneumatic retinopexy, vitrectomy, or scleral buckling.
