What Is Macular Degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive eye disease that impacts the macula, a small region at the center of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. As its name implies, AMD is more likely to occur in older adults, but it can also affect younger people.

Our team understands the impact AMD can have on daily life, and we are committed to providing compassionate care and support to our patients.

What Causes AMD?

AMD can be caused by genetic and environmental factors, including:

  • Smoking
  • High blood pressure
  • Obesity
  • A poor diet

The disease occurs when the macula deteriorates, which can cause a gradual loss of central vision and can have significant impacts on daily activities such as reading, driving, and recognizing faces.

Our Approach to AMD Care

Our team at the Global Retina Institute is experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of AMD. We use imaging technology such as Heidelberg OCT/OCT-A to provide accurate and early detection of the disease.

Additionally, we offer personalized treatment plans that can help slow the progression of AMD and preserve visual function, including ocular surface optimization, nutrition, and laser therapy.

Heidelberg OCT/OCT-A is an imaging technology that plays a crucial role in diagnosing and managing age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

Heidelberg OCT/OCT-A works by using light waves to create high-resolution images of the retina, which allows our specialists to identify subtle changes in the macula that may indicate the early stages of AMD. By detecting the disease at an early stage, we can develop personalized treatment plans designed to slow the progression of AMD and preserve vision.

The benefits of Heidelberg OCT/OCT-A extend beyond diagnosis, as it also provides our specialists with precise data to help monitor the progression of AMD over time.

AMD can cause various symptoms, such as dry eyes, exacerbating the disease’s progression and leading to discomfort and visual impairment.

Ocular surface optimization involves using specific products and procedures designed to boost eye health, reduce inflammation, and improve tear film stability. Our team may recommend the use of lubricating eye drops, eyelid hygiene, and punctal plugs to help prevent dry eyes, a common side effect of certain AMD medications.

A healthy ocular surface can help support the effectiveness of other treatments used to treat AMD, such as laser therapy.

Nutrition is key when it comes to managing AMD. Certain nutrients are essential for maintaining eye health and can help slow the progression of AMD, reducing the risk of vision loss.

Our team understands the importance of nutrition in managing AMD, and we provide personalized advice to help our patients maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle. Research has shown that certain vitamins and minerals are beneficial for preventing or managing AMD. These include vitamins C, E, and A, zinc, copper, and lutein.

Additionally, omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and other sources have been shown to be useful in slowing the progression of AMD.
